the doctor
The notorious Dr. Black Jack is a striking figure, to say the least. An unruly mess of black hair is shot with a shock of white on the right side of his head, remnants of his childhood surgery. Along with the odd hair is a long surgical scar, crossing the bridge of his nose and face from right to left, also from his early age. The skin graft is a full shade darker than his normal skin tone. Dark eyebrows are in a near constant furrow over his brown eyes. A smile (one that isn’t wry, that is) is a rare treat. If that isn’t scary enough, the man dresses like the proverbial vampire: white dress shirt, black vest, black pants, red ribbon tie, and a black coat...All topped off with a black cloak. It almost never gets more casual than that, discounting his white medical scrubs. Even when consulting with patients, he eschews the traditional white doctor’s coat - it’s a symbol of the Hippocratic Oath that he never took, after all.
his philosophy
Much of Black Jack’s true personality is never seen behind his cold outer shell, not that it bothers him. It’s almost as if he fosters the popular belief that he’s a heartless, greedy, evil bastard who only cares about money and personal gain. But under the hard exterior is a a truly good person. Although he can be abrasive at times, Black Jack has a powerful passion for taking care of his charges; whether it’s a patient, his adoptive daughter Pinoco, or an endangered Iriomote cat that got itself injured, he will see them through to the end whether it be inevitable death, or (with him as doctor) a more inevitable survival. And despite his outrageous medical fees, he doesn’t do this out of greed. In fact, he often won’t bother following through on the bill with a family who can’t afford it, and a good portion of money he does get goes to the environment, or victims of corruption. Which brings this to the two things he hates: one, corrupt capitalists and criminals; and two, anyone who tries to harm the people under his care. On the other hand, BJ does have a bit of a proud streak. He doesn’t take insults to his skill very well, and can get fiercely competitive. He doesn’t like to admit when he’s done something wrong, and isn’t very good at working with other people beyond the general “Hand me the hemoclamp,” or “Check vitals” brand of assistance.
